The Changing Face of Learning Blog Post Series: Do and Perform

• 2 min read

The Changing Face of Learning Blog Post Series 1Most training professionals are familiar with the US Department of Labor estimates that 70% of development happens on the job, 20% happens through coaching and mentoring and the last 10% happens through formal training, which includes IL workshops and e-learning modules. And we intuitively know these statistics are true.  Remember your music teacher telling you over and over to practice and that is the only way you are going to get better at playing the piano?  Or your coach telling you to practice your serves?  We grew up hearing “practice makes perfect.”

So what are corporate training and development professionals doing to help learners make the transition from the formal learning setting to application on the job? Here is an interesting statistic from “Bridging the Gap – Integrating Learning & Work” 2012 Benchmark study conducted by Towards Maturity.  “94% of learning professionals seek to speed up the application of learning back into the workplace and only 23% feel that they achieve this”.

Learning professionals want to speed up the application of learning on the job because they know that…

  • The goal of training and development activities is to improve employee on the job performance and as a result organizational performance.
  • Performance can only improve if learners apply learning content on the job.

To achieve organizational performance, make sure all training programs your organization invests in offers learners step by step instructions on how to apply on the job, where 70% of development occurs and leverages the natural way people develop.

We will continue with our series ‘The Changing Face of Learning’ next week with my second post on keeping it ‘short & memorable’. So do look out for that!
