The Changing Face of Learning Blog Post Series: Watch & Learn

• 2 min read

video courses e-learningThis is part three of a three part blog post series on the changing face of learning. In this blog post we will look at the benefits of incorporating video into training programs. If you missed parts 1 and 2 of this blog series on the ‘Changing Face of Learning’, please check them out here: Part 1: Do & Perform; Part 2: Short & Memorable.

Recently, more and more training companies are incorporating video into their training programs.  And they are doing so for good reasons.  According to Yankee Group’s Anywhere Enterprise:  2010 US Unified Communications FastView Survey, they found the following benefits of adding video to your training programs:

1) Participants learn 200% more with video

2) Participants absorb information 40% faster than with voice communications

3) Participants retain 38% more information than with audio

4) Video increases the power of persuasion by 43% over audio or written communications

5) Video increases the impact of communication by 67%

Now, factor in your learners’ expectations.  They watch videos in their personal life to learn new things whether it be for a hobby or a home improvement project. They go to the company’s website and watch a video.  Now, they have just come to expect to watch videos on the job to learn new things.

What’s more, research has in fact shown that demonstrating (visually) a new skill or behavior is important to multi-modal instruction and that’s one reason why video has become a frequently used tool in the  course designer toolkit. Live-action video enhances elearning and shows learners how to perform new tasks whilst providing the human engagement that will actually get learners to listen and learn! Check out this great post in eLearn Mag on tips for using video in elearning. Docebo Learning Management System also has great features for the easy creation of elearning courses using existing video.

So, to sum up, adding video to your training will yield significant benefits and will meet your learners’ expectations –  but it’s also important to make sure the videos are high definition for the best learner experience. This is one of the reason’s why most content providers (and all of Vado’s elearning courses) start with a short, high definition video.
