The US Department of Labor estimates that organizations spend about $1 billion a week to compensate employees for safety-related job injuries. Beyond this financial burden, organizations can also face litigation if they don’t train their employees on job-related safety issues.– ELearning! May/June 2014

Having a safe and healthy workplace is these days a major priority for both governmental organizations and companies.

For these reasons workers and their supervisors must invest in mandatory training. The recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplace is one topic generally covered in a standard Safety Training programmes.

Elearning has become the primary delivery method for Safety Training because it ensures both a reduction in training expenditure and a high penetration of information (for immediate and high ROI).

But with a geographically dispersed workforce and a large variety of workplace situations (from home to office, factory or even on-site situations such as mines or rigs) it is still difficult to design an effective elearning training program for all.

Training by video has quickly become the most used – and useful – way to provide training on health and safety related topics.

With the increased availability of smart devices in the workplace, the chances of providing effective training for all is now a reality, much more so than in the past. And the results worldwide are quite good: when it comes to Compliance Training, video is the most popular way of sharing information within the corporate community.

Libraries of health and safety training courses are available on the market to suit the needs of particular industries. And the use of Mobile Applications to deliver these courses is becoming more and more prevalent in corporate learning.

According to different sources, organizations are adopting video produced within the organization and outside of the organization – i.e. externally produced. And the trend is to produce video that can work properly both on desktop and on mobile devices.

What does all this mean? Amongst the different drivers for mobile learning, the most relevant within corporate training are:

  • supporting employees at the point of need
  • improving employee engagement

To get the most from this general trend, companies should tread carefully when about to embark on a video training (eLearning +mLearning) program. Below you’ll find some pointers to help!

How to create effective video learning for compliance

A video training project should, at a minimum, take into account:

  • a vast library of videos
  • a Mobile App for learning
  • a social network integration

You can go for buying or creating your own videos, but in both cases videos should be: short, consistent , and audience targeted.

You can develop or buy an App for mLearning but it should support, at a minimum:

  • geolocalization
  • SSO with other productivity tools
  • use of a camera (for user generated contents)

And when it comes to social….

Going mobile without going social is utter nonsense! You have to allow at a minimum an integration with an internal social network if your corporate policies don’t allow integrations with the most common social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.

What can you expect?

You can expect high results from such an mLearning strategy when all of these (above) factors are taken into account. You can expect:

  • a high level of completion rate
  • a high level of participation
  • immediate usage of the acquired knowledge
  • contextualization of acquired skills within the workplace

This is exactly what an employer wants and expects from a successful health and safety training program!
