Is there a way to assign new users to an other default node than the root node?

what do you mean? During the user registration process made by the user or when creating a new user from administration?

When you register a user manually, just select the org. chart tab of the new user dialog.

If you want the user to be added to a node when he register, you can use a registration code so the user will select the node from a dropdown window and will be inserted in the selected node after completing the registration.
