What is 70:20:10 and How Can Your Organization Benefit From It?

An LMS Supporting the 70:20:10 Framework Will Engage Your Learners and Fuel Your Business

Training employees, whether through a part of onboarding or promotion, can be stressful, but it’s important that your learners are engaged and retaining the required knowledge. We talk a lot about the 70:20:10 learning model, and we know it works, but training professionals in much of the world have yet to adopt this approach. So what is it, really?

What Is the 70:20:10 Framework?

The 70:20:10 learning model was developed by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) in the mid-1980’s. Morgan McCall, Michael M. Lombardo and Robert W. Eichinger asked 200 successful managers how they learned. From the answers they received, they divided the learning into three categories:

  • 70% – informal, on the job, experienced based
  • 20% – coaching, mentoring, developing through others
  • 10% – formal learning interventions and structured courses

Why Hasn’t the 70:20:10 Framework Caught On?

Research shows that one in three companies either do not have an official onboarding process, or their onboarding process does not include structured training. The 70 20 10 model has not gained global traction because some believe the 70:20:10 model will not work because there is not enough research proving its success, and others are worried it requires them to abandon their formal learning.

Good news, neither of these concerns are true!

Of the organizations that have embraced the 70:20:10 framework:

  • 73% improved process
  • 72% improved efficiency
  • 63% improved productivity

Furthermore, the 70:20:10 framework does not require the abandonment of your formal learning processes. Remember, 10% of the 70:20:10 framework is formal learning. For the model to succeed, your learners need some formal learning – after all, there’s a time and a place for all training modalities.

Why an LMS Based on 70:20:10 Works

Studies show that companies with an LMS based on the 70:20:10 learning model means learners are more engaged, retain more knowledge and new hires are less likely to leave your organization before they complete their first year. Brandon Hall Group found companies are searching for learning management systems that incorporate collaborative learning in 2016 to help reach those goals.

Enacting the 70:20:10 Framework

Having a learning management system (LMS) that supports the 70:20:10 learning model will ease the transition from a learning plan that only supports formal learning. Docebo’s 6.9 update is here, and it’s the world’s only LMS ready to support the 70:20:10 learning model, with Docebo Share taking care of the 70% of informal learning, Docebo Coach supporting of the 20% of learning by mentoring and Docebo Learn makes up the difference by supporting the 10% or so of formal learning (even though we already know the 70:20:10 ratio isn’t “fixed.”
