As the world becomes more complex faster than ever, the learning industry has the responsibility to help people during this time with solutions designed to ease the transition toward a better, technology-driven world

In fact, the pace at which learning technology has evolved is a direct result of the demand for Learning and Development (L&D) to remain relevant, engaging and effective.

There are three distinct generations of enterprise learning that chart the evolution of the industry from the first LMS to social learning platforms and, now, the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) to power L&D activities.

Generation 1 – The Learning Management System

The first generation of LMS-powered enterprise learning dates back to the very first LMS in the 1970s. It was a very simple form of managing what users were consuming and a digital way to track tasks.

The role of L&D here was seen as a commodity with the LMS mainly designed for admins who pushed learning content to learners who didn’t have a choice in what they consumed.

Generation 2 – The Democratization of Learning

The second generation was characterized by the ability to leverage the knowledge of the whole organization using social learning to help L&D play a greater role in achieving organizational goals. In this generation, L&D started to place a greater focus on facilitating learning as it happens in real life.

Generation 3 – Artificial Intelligence-Powered Learning

We have now entered the third generation of learning thanks to the introduction of learning-specific artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

AI-powered enterprise learning enables true personalization of the learning experience, giving learners the content they need, when they need it and how they need it.
